God's Byline
02:16
|
|||
Always waiting for the comedown
Walking home just after sundown
Praying for the death of winter
And all the malice she brings with her
She won’t die
She won’t quit
She breaks your heart
There’s a fracture in the skyline
There’s quotations in god’s byline
I can’t help but think he’s laughing
He never answers what you’re asking

Empathy
03:26
|
|||
Is empathy a principle you can teach
Or is it esoteric and out of reach
Embedded into our DNA
But somehow inaccessible day today
God knows I try to feel pity for my fellow man
So why do I feel the need to spit in outstretched hands
I’ve often wondered what it takes
To push a man so far he really breaks
Although I’ve seen it for myself
It seems abstract when it’s happening to someone else
Falling so short of the ideal
If I face it, I feel too much
So I just choose not to feel
I believe in few things you can touch
It’s mostly thoughts and words I’ve analyzed too much
As such, I often feel adrift
Wading through Rimbaud verses trying to catch a hint
Some days I’m just too exhausted to keep you in my thoughts
Doesn’t mean that I love you less
I’m just stretched too thin and shot
I wish that I could fix every problem
Give hope to every heart
But I just don’t have the strength and we’re all so far apart

Ephedrine
03:02
|
|||
Pharmaceuticals and ephedrine
Frozen plastic-covered offerings
Endless toil posed as poetry
Ten thousand hours yields no mastery
Without the elegance of literature
Mostly makeshift splints and ligature
Countdown resets, exit the chrysalis
You’ve become the boulder rolled by Sisyphus

Light the Fuse
05:34
|
|||
I wanna burden the world with my misery
Weigh it down and make it sink with me
If they won’t care then why should I
Light the fuse, watch it die
Wanna start the fire that burns the world
Every man and woman, every boy and girl
Reduced to ash and finally free
Free from pain and loss eternally

Met you when you were only three
You were the best thing that ever happened to me
Things have changed and it seems obscene
I’ve gotta watch you grow up through this tiny screen
There are things in this world that can never be replaced
There’s a type of hurt that time cannot erase
I’m incessantly thinking of your face
Your smile, your laugh, and all the brilliant things you’d say
Now there’s a distance I can’t breach
She built up a wall around you and pulled you out of reach
There are things in this world that can never be replaced
There’s a type of hurt that time cannot erase
Everything falls apart each day
When I wake up and realize you’re still endless worlds away
I wish I could hold you one more time
Kiss your head and remind you that my love will never die

Mutual Use
03:05
|
|||
Adult relationships have a way of getting confused
I’ve watched the line grow thinner between love and mutual use
No matter how simple, we find ways to complicate
Turn biology into poems and the need for validation
I don’t care who you’re sleeping with, I don’t need to know what you did
Most of this is just residual myths that we learned when we were kids
I don’t care if it all works out, I don’t need a guarantee
Time is an unassailable wall that separates you from me
Got a sneaking suspicion that I’m caught up in the past
Hung up on the idea of a notion that was never intended to last
Not that it really matters, if we feel it then I guess it’s real
I guess my point is that it’s all subjective
We’re not good or bad, we just fuck up and we deal
We’re either doing the hurting or we’re getting hurt
It’s an endless cycle ’til we’re in the dirt
But I guess it kinda figures that the way we’d spend our lives
Is navigating the middle ground between conviction and compromise
Isn’t that true of everything, from our sex lives to the state
And is it really that different at all, or just different ways to masturbate

Got a message from a friend about something I said
Another badge-less pig reporting in on my infractions
Didn’t ask me how I’ve been even though he knows I had a hard year
More important to check on my behavior than my health
What a perfect distillation of so much that’s wrong with us
Optics matter more than honest conversation
Context be damned, just batten down the hatches
Abandon ship at the first sign of public backlash
Don’t think we should be defined
By whatever flags we fly
Nuance gets lost in slogans
Rhetoric can’t trump life
Everybody has a time
Executed for their crimes
Judged by public opinion
When it’s mine, I won’t apologize
I still wanna kill every cop I see
But half of them are people sharing stages with me
And I still wanna smash the state
But now it has a human face
People I once called friends, turned informers

Divorce Proceedings
02:48
|
|||
Your ex hates you, what a drag
Manual labor’s not your bag
Now you’re the one who’s old and lame
The more things change, the more they stay the same
It gets better, so you thought
Life’s a rehearsal of what you’re taught
Not built for a world that’s so complex
Divorce proceedings and bouncing checks

We took you to the zoo for Halloween
You wanted to see the dolphins
You sat on my shoulders and you smiled
And cried in the pictures, you were tired
I will always love you
You were only four years old
So full of life and wonder
I’ve never wanted normal things
You made me wanna be a father
I will always love you
The way we looked in photographs
Will you remember me like that
Held you up by the Christmas tree so tall
Will you remember me at all
I will always love you
